Opening Day Success for Stockton Hockey Club 

Stockton Hockey Club’s new season got off to a fantastic start this weekend, with strong performances across the club and plenty of reasons to be excited about what lies ahead.

From the Men’s 1st XI securing a hard-fought win in the YNE Premier Division, to a huge victory for the 2s, the launch of our new Development team and three U13 players making their club debuts, it was a weekend that showcased exactly what Stockton Hockey is all about.

Men’s 1s Start with a Win

The Men’s 1st XI returned to YNE Premier League action with a 3–2 victory away at Durham City.

A new-look Stockton side, featuring a number of exciting younger players, started brightly and took control of the game. Billy Merrifield opened the scoring after some excellent attacking play, before Ed Beak doubled the advantage before half time.

Stockton continued to push after the break and Merrifield grabbed his second to make it 3–0.

Durham, however, refused to give up and pulled two goals back late in the game, setting up a nervy finish. A penalty corner after the final whistle gave the hosts one last opportunity, but Stockton’s defence stood firm, with Tompkinson charging out brilliantly and Adam Turner producing a series of excellent saves.

The three points were secured and, while there is plenty to work on, it was an important opening-day victory in what promises to be another competitive YNE Premier Division campaign.

The 2s Make a Perfect Start

The Men’s 2nd XI could hardly have asked for a better start to the season, recording an emphatic 9–1 victory over Durham City 2s.

Fresh from retaining the Durham County Cup, the 2s produced an outstanding attacking display, dominating possession and creating chance after chance.

Jamie Metcalfe opened the scoring before Timmy Foley doubled the advantage. Matty White then added a third, followed by Jake Leader from a superb short-corner routine.

Sam Godfrey grabbed two goals, while Shaun Gale also found the net twice. Jamie added his second to complete the scoring and round off a dominant afternoon.

There were excellent performances throughout the squad, with Max Mowbray particularly influential in midfield and a number of players stepping up and making an impact.

The result was the perfect way to begin the campaign.

A Brilliant Start for Our New Development Team

One of the biggest positives from the weekend was the first competitive outing for Stockton’s newly launched Development Team.

They played out an entertaining 3–3 draw with Durham City, an excellent result for a team that has been created to give players an opportunity to develop, gain match experience and progress through the club.

Even more excitingly, three U13 players made their Stockton Hockey Club debuts.

That is exactly what we want to see from our pathway, young players getting the opportunity to play alongside older players, experience senior hockey and take their next steps within the club.

There is plenty more to come from this team, but the opening weekend has already shown just how valuable the Development Team can be for the future of Stockton Hockey.

Men’s 3s Enjoy a 4–0 Win

The Men’s 3rd XI also enjoyed an excellent opening-day result, beating a very experienced Marton side 4–0.

It was very much a game of two halves. Stockton played some excellent hockey in the first half but were frustrated by a few missed opportunities. Craig eventually broke the deadlock, putting Stockton 1–0 up at half time.

After a positive conversation at the break, the team came out in the second half and put everything into practice.

George doubled the lead after some superb play down the left, James added a third following another excellent team move, and Henry completed the scoring with a smart short-corner routine and quick one-two.

The whole team worked tirelessly, moved the ball well and made themselves available, while the defence produced a particularly strong performance.

The Ladies Get Their Season Underway

The Ladies’ 1st XI also got their season underway, despite a 5–1 defeat to Durham City.

The scoreline certainly did not tell the whole story.

Stockton started brightly, keeping possession, working hard as a team and creating plenty of opportunities. Jess and Emma produced some excellent runs through the middle, linking with Lynsey over the top before Rachel finished brilliantly to get Stockton on the scoresheet.

The second half brought plenty more positives, with Sharon and Sophie creating movement and dragging the Durham defence around, while Charlie and Stevo worked tirelessly at the back.

There was determination throughout the team and plenty of encouraging signs to build on as the season progresses.

A special mention also goes to Emily, who produced a spectacular piece of defending to clear a short corner off the line!

More Than Just Results

Opening weekend is about much more than the scorelines.

Across our senior teams we saw wins, goals, new players, young players stepping up and the launch of a brand-new Development Team.

Three U13 players making their senior club debuts is particularly exciting and demonstrates the importance of creating a genuine pathway through Stockton Hockey Club.

With new teams, new players and plenty of young talent coming through, there is a huge amount to look forward to this season.

A massive well done to everyone who represented Stockton this weekend, whether playing, coaching, umpiring, volunteering or supporting from the sidelines.

The season is underway, and Stockton Hockey is only just getting started.
